Practice data from NJ MVC Quiz shows the "turns, right-of-way, lanes and parking" group is one of the two hardest topic clusters: 39.7% of 18,410 recorded answers were wrong. These are practice answers on this site, not official MVC results. Below: the rule, the official wording, and the trap in each most-missed question. Rules checked against the NJ Driver Manual (Revised 4/2026).
Quick table (practice error rate = wrong ÷ answered)
| Question topic | Correct answer | Wrong / answered | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acceleration lane definition | An extra lane at a highway entrance | 657 / 1,535 | 42.8% |
| Parking distance from a crosswalk at an intersection | 25 feet | 1,034 / 2,488 | 41.6% |
| Left turn from two-way road onto four-lane highway | All of the above | 893 / 2,248 | 39.7% |
| Parking distance from a fire hydrant | 10 feet | 728 / 1,844 | 39.5% |
| Parking distance from a stop sign | 50 feet | 947 / 2,414 | 39.2% |
| Two cars enter an uncontrolled intersection together | Driver on the left yields to the driver on the right | 684 / 1,836 | 37.3% |
| Left turn from two-way street: which lane | Lane nearest the center of the roadway | 659 / 1,776 | 37.1% |
1. Parking on a hill (with a curb)
Manual: facing downhill, set the brake and turn the wheels toward the curb; facing uphill, turn the wheels away from the curb. Memory hook: downhill = toward, uphill = away. (This guide covers the curb case only, as stated in the manual.)
2. Left turns (N.J.S.A. 39:4-123)
- Two-way road onto two-way road: approach as close as possible to the line nearest the center of the road; do not cross lane markings; end to the right of the center line of the road you enter.
- Two-way road onto a four-lane highway: approach close to the center line, turn before reaching the center of the intersection, and turn into the lane nearest the center line on the right side of the other road (the passing lane); when traffic permits, move right. That is why "All of the above" is correct: all three listed actions are in the manual.
- One-way onto one-way: from the left lane into the left lane. Trap: people pick "left curb" options; the starting lane is the one nearest the center.
3. Uncontrolled intersections (N.J.S.A. 39:4-81)
Uncontrolled = two or more roads join with no signal or regulatory device. Slow down, be ready to stop; a driver coming from a private road or driveway yields to main-road traffic; as a rule the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right. A dark signal (power failure) is treated as a 4-way stop. The same left-yields-to-right rule is the manual's fallback when unsure at a traffic circle.
4. Acceleration lanes
Highways, parkways and turnpikes are divided roads with no direct intersections; you enter via an acceleration lane, an extra lane used to speed up to the flow of traffic. You must yield to traffic already on the main road before merging, and should not stop in the acceleration lane.
5. Parking-distance recap (manual list of where parking is prohibited)
Fire hydrant 10 ft; crosswalk at an intersection 25 ft; railroad crossing 50 ft; stop sign 50 ft; fire-station driveway 20 ft (75 ft opposite). Full number list: Numbers to Memorize.
