If you already have a New Jersey driver license, start with the MVC License Renewal page. It links to the official online service and renewal appointments. The useful first question is whether you can renew online or need a Licensing Center visit. A routine renewal, a REAL ID upgrade and a first-time license application are different transactions.
Official sources checked November 3, 2026. This is an independent guide; use MVC's current instructions for your transaction.
1. Check which renewal route applies
MVC says most drivers can renew online, even when a renewal notice says to visit an agency. That does not mean everyone qualifies. Start from the official renewal page and follow the service's eligibility instructions.
MVC specifically directs Commercial Driver License holders and people whose visa is expiring to a Licensing Center. If you cannot renew online, make a renewal appointment through the link on the official page. This guide does not determine an individual's immigration status or CDL requirements.
If your license has been expired for more than three years, MVC says you must start over as a first-time driver. Use its linked First Driver License process instead of assuming ordinary renewal will resolve that case. Our first-license guide explains the separate learning and testing path. For an out-of-state or foreign license, start with the transfer guide.
2. Before renewing online, check your address
MVC tells drivers who have moved to change their address before renewing online. This matters because the new card is mailed. Use the address-change link on the official renewal page, then return to the renewal service.
After a successful online renewal, MVC says the license is renewed immediately. You can print the receipt to carry if the old card expires before the new one arrives. The renewal page gives a two-to-four-week mailing estimate. Save the confirmation and receipt; the estimate is not a guaranteed delivery date. A renewal receipt should not be assumed to satisfy airline identification requirements.
3. If you need an appointment, prepare documents first
Use the MVC identification checklist for your transaction. It lists identity documents totaling six points, residential address evidence, and Social Security number, ITIN or affidavit requirements. Follow the Standard or REAL ID document checklist that applies to you; the general page is not a promise that every listed option applies to both.
For a Standard license, MVC lists one proof of New Jersey residency; REAL ID requires two. Identity documents for the six-point check must be paper or hard copy. Acceptable residential-address documents may be electronic or paper. Non-English documents need a certified translation. MVC also requires a completed BA-208 application for a license renewal; the official page links to it.
For an ordinary Standard auto license, the renewal page lists a $24 fee. Added classes or endorsements cost extra. The fee table has separate columns for initial issue, renewal, changes/duplicate and REAL ID: do not read a neighboring column as the total for your transaction. Check the official instructions for any upgrade or combined class.
At the appointment, submit the application, documents and payment, and have your photo taken as directed by MVC. Going in person does not mean receiving a printed card that day: MVC says licenses are mailed after in-person renewals too.
4. Decide separately whether you want REAL ID
A Standard New Jersey license can still be used for driving. You are not required to get REAL ID simply because you are renewing. The official REAL ID page explains when it matters for identification and lists valid alternatives, including a valid U.S. passport for domestic air travel.
If you want to obtain or upgrade to REAL ID, MVC directs you to a Licensing Center appointment and its document-selection checklist. It says you can upgrade now or when renewal is due. Do not treat an ordinary online renewal as a REAL ID upgrade. Follow the current REAL ID instructions for documents, appointment type and charges.
5. Keep a short completion checklist
- Confirm that the transaction is NJ license renewal, rather than transfer or first-time licensing.
- Correct a changed address before online renewal.
- If a visit is required, book the appropriate appointment and prepare the matching document checklist and BA-208.
- Keep the successful renewal confirmation and, for online renewal, print the available receipt.
- Allow for delivery of the new card; an in-person appointment does not provide same-day printing.
