NJ Permit Test: How Many Questions Can You Miss? (2026 Passing Score Guide)

The NJ MVC knowledge test has 50 questions. You need 40 correct (80%) to pass — meaning you can miss up to 10. Here's exactly what to expect and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

TL;DR

  • 50 questions on the NJ MVC knowledge test
  • Pass = 40 correct (80%) — you can miss up to 10 questions
  • Test available in 13 languages including Chinese
  • Based on analysis of 57,217 real practice test records, traffic signs and signal rules are where most people lose points
  • Permit fee: $10 (+ $4 GDL decals if under 21)

The single most searched question before the NJ permit test: "How many can I get wrong?"

Short answer: 10. You need 40 out of 50. But knowing the number isn't enough — knowing which questions people actually miss is what gets you there on the first try.

The NJ Knowledge Test: By the Numbers

The NJ MVC knowledge test format is straightforward:

Detail Answer
Total questions 50 (+ 1 organ donation survey)
Questions needed to pass 40
Maximum you can miss 10
Passing percentage 80%
Test languages 13 (incl. Chinese, Spanish, Arabic)
Results valid for 2 years

The survey question about organ donation does not count toward your score — it's purely voluntary.

Official source: "80 percent, or 40 of the 50 questions, must have correct answers." — NJ Driver Manual

What Topics Are Tested?

The 50 questions are drawn from the entire NJ Driver Manual, but they cluster heavily around these areas:

  • Road signs (regulatory, warning, guide signs)
  • Traffic signals and lights (including malfunctions)
  • Right-of-way rules
  • Speed limits (school zones, residential areas, highways)
  • Alcohol and drug laws (DUI limits, implied consent)
  • NJ-specific rules (point system, license suspension)
  • GDL (Graduated Driver License) requirements for drivers under 21
  • Safe driving practices (following distance, passing rules)

Where People Actually Lose Points (Real Data)

We analyzed 57,217 real practice test answers from NJ MVC Quiz users to find the highest-failure topics. Here's where most people drop points:

Highest Error Rate Questions

1. Non-working traffic signals (55% error rate) Most people answer "uncontrolled intersection." The correct answer is all-way stop (4-way stop). Per N.J.S.A. 39:4-81, a broken signal must be treated as a 4-way stop.

2. Improper passing — points added (53% error rate) How many points does improper passing add to your record? Answer: 4 points (N.J.S.A. 39:4-85, 39:4-86). Most people guess 5 or 3.

3. Steady yellow light (40% error rate) A yellow light means stop before entering the intersection (unless you're already too close to stop safely). Not "proceed with caution."

4. Driving after license suspension (47.5% error rate) This is also one of the most-attempted questions — 863 users have answered it wrong in our dataset.

5. Altering a driver's license (45.7% error rate) Our most-attempted wrong answer across all users (903 errors). The penalties are specific and easy to mix up.

The Bottom Line on Losing Points

If you're worried about failing, focus on:

  • Traffic signal rules (especially non-standard situations)
  • The point system (which violations add how many points)
  • NJ-specific laws (not just general driving knowledge)

These three areas account for a disproportionate share of failed tests in our data.

How to Pass on the First Try

1. Don't just memorize — understand the logic

Most wrong answers happen because the test uses edge cases (broken signals, unusual intersections) that feel ambiguous. Understanding why the rule exists makes it harder to forget.

2. Focus on NJ-specific rules

Generic driving knowledge isn't enough. NJ has its own point system, GDL requirements, and specific statutes. The test will ask about these.

3. Use spaced repetition

Our Smart Mode uses the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve — when you get a question wrong, it comes back in 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 30 minutes, etc. This is how you actually lock in answers before test day.

4. Do at least one full mock test

The real test is 50 questions with no hints. Practice under real conditions before you go in.

If You Fail: What Happens Next

Failing the knowledge test is more common than people think — estimates suggest around 30-40% fail on the first attempt. If you do:

  • You can retake the test at any MVC Licensing Center
  • You'll need to pay the applicable permit fee again
  • The test questions will be different next time
  • There's no limit on how many times you can retake it

The most important thing: identify which topics caused the failure and drill those specifically, not the entire test again.

What You Need to Bring

Before you can take the knowledge test, you need to have your documents in order:

  • 6 points of ID (passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, etc.)
  • Proof of NJ residential address
  • Payment for the permit fee ($10, plus $4 for GDL decals if you're under 21)

Check the full 6 Points of ID guide on the official NJ MVC website.

Ready to Practice?

The best way to avoid missing those 10 questions is to practice specifically on the hard ones. Start with our practice test — our Smart Mode will automatically prioritize the questions most likely to appear on your exam based on what other NJ test-takers consistently miss.
